Our software stack works with the network as a plug and play overlay to the current network. By placing our cloud-native software at the edge, we can enable the next generation of the Internet. 

Our comprehensive and modular software driven approach easily integrates with existing/independent virtualization frameworks The modular framework allows for seamless integration with 3rd parties across all layers of our software. 

The software interfaces in a standards compliant manner to an eNodeB at Edge locations, has a centralized node for Control Plane and Management Processing in a cloud native environment, has a traffic handling limited to uplink and Edge policy based downlink traffic AND is fail-to-wire implementation to increase overall availability.

Edge Architecture

The Edge Internet is formed by a universe of Edge Nodes.

Conceptually, an Edge Architectural framework consists of Edge nodes that are picked dynamically in close proximity to the user.

Given the cloud revolution and the need for “multi-tenancy” across multiple dimensions, Edge Nodes are software defined and cloud native.

A fundamental observation includes that Edge Nodes implement both access network functions and application functions in virtualized and cloud native environments.

Edge Algorithms

The primary drivers for Edge Algorithms is centered around mobile broadband architectures (both 4G/5G) have enabled an IP layer at the Radio Access Network, but the services layer has moved to a distant origin cloud.

Edge Optimization enables the opportunity to have the shared radio layer, IP network layers, and application services layers to coexist at the same location.

Implementing the micro back end at the Edge is vastly superior, compared to delivering the application from a packet core node, both from network efficiency and application delivery perspectives.

Programmable Edge

The fundamental new component of the Programmable Edge includes connectivity providers that can expose existing network functions as Edge API’s to the Edge value-chain. Given network assets are unique to the connectivity provider, this is a critical component in protecting and monetizing their contribution to the Edge value chain.

In addition to monetization, exposing existing assets such as API’s leads to an amplification of value across an ecosystem and web of partners.

Additionally, Edge API’s will be available to an extended eco-system of developers, leading to a new genre of Edge Applications and an Edge App Store.

Plug and Play

On existing mobility networks with a view towards backward compatibility and time to market advantage, our edge architecture consists of a plug-n-play overlay network of edge nodes coupled with no upgrades to the operator’s enhanced Packet Core (ePC) or Radio Access Networks (RAN). Edge nodes can re-use existing virtual machines in central offices.

Recall, while 5G requires MEC, Edge does not require a 5G network – and in particular connectivity providers can focus on enhancing 4G networks to support 5G application use-cases. We refer to this as “5G-fication over 4G”.

Overlay Architecture

The key value of the overlay approach is the elimination of the need for Mobile Network Operators infrastructure upgrades.

The overlay approach is characterized by:

No Upgrades to the underlying network elements in the operator network or in the cloud datacenters of application providers.

Plug and Play capabilities. Edge Servers are self‐contained systems of servers, storage, switches, and software, that require a simple configuration at the appropriate locations.

Fail to Wire & High Availability solution that improves upon the existing high availability in the network, and is not service affecting. The Alef solution does not impact the operator network as default data flows through the core network.

Overlay Managed System provides the Alef solution as an automated managed service, with little or no requirements related to integration with the mobile network operator operations support systems.

Open Architecture

Open architecture and open markets are the foundation of our technology base and market vision. The Open5G architecture is an internet overlay, requiring no changes to the underlying access network or origin application clouds.

Our body of work is best described as; Plug-n-Play Edge Architecture, Intelligent Edge Algorithms and Open API’s.

In the 5G era of immersive and interactive applications, the breakthrough technologies that we bring to market expose a new level of network performance to applications and amplify the power of 5G to the open internet community.  Open and easy to access API’s are the hallmark of Open5G.
